When it comes to owning a new build home, the perks are aplenty. Yet, the prospect of a cookie-cutter space identical to your neighbours' can be a bit of a turn-off. But fear not!

New builds present an exciting opportunity - a blank canvas awaiting your personal touch. Still, staring at those magnolia-painted walls can feel uninspiring.

That's where we step in! Our team of designers are here to make personalising your home a breeze. We've gathered their ingenious ideas to help infuse character into every inch of your new build, transforming it from bland to brilliantly grand!

We can help you to completely personalise your new build into an unrecognisable space. Get started today:

How to add character to your new build home

We spoke to My Bespoke Room's resident new build expert, Laura C, who has not only waved her magic wand over her own stunning new build but she's also sprinkled her expertise on countless other thrilled clients' homes.

Even our reviews prove how awesome Laura is when it comes to new builds: “It was exactly what I needed after moving into a new build and having a blank canvas to fill. My designer Laura was excellent, I valued her expert input and she was able to bring my imagined design to life after listening to just some vague ideas. She added some great detail which I feel will give my final design the wow factor I was looking for.” - Mandi S

"I totally get the feeling of stepping into a new build home with exposed windows, plain walls and spotlights that feel more like an airport runway. It can be hugely overwhelming, so my biggest tip is don’t be afraid to accept that it is a long term project.

Start by investing in the key things that are harder to change, like the flooring, window dressings and any built-in furniture." - Laura C

1. Switch out the flooring

It might sting a bit to part ways with those brand-new carpets, but just like our personalities, our homes should reflect our individuality. If that grey carpet isn't speaking to your soul, it's time for a change.

If you're looking for a warmer, neutral feel, then woven carpet or textured sisal could be perfect for you - their natural look, reminiscent of boho and rustic design is a perfect way to infuse personality and cosiness into your new build.

Not a fan of carpets? That's okay too, we suggest switching out for herringbone or plank wooden floors that add a little character while not feeling out of place in your modern space.

2. Dress up your windows

Those bare windows are most likely feeling a little lonely, so it's about time we dress them appropriately.

First things first, let's figure out what you need: privacy, some light control, or perhaps a bit of both?

Then it's time to consider the aesthetics, to save space roman blinds may be your best friend, or our designer's favourite - shutters which create a more classic vibe.

Depending on your layout, curtains may be an option, but you will want to consider spacing between furniture. Cotton and linen curtains blend perfectly with modern architecture, creating a sophisticated look.

3. First impressions

Typically, in new build developments, it's common for all the houses on the street to look very similar, so why not make yours stand out?

That's right, the exterior of your home deserves just as much love as the interior, so inject a little personality and let your home be the star of the street by switching out the front door or painting it a bright and bold colour which reflects your personality.

To take it a step further, you can also consider changing out your window trimming and rendering the exterior brick.

When it comes to setting foot in the house, you want to both make an impact whilst also creating a warm and welcoming environment.

To add personality to your new build's hallway, try painting the bannister a bold and contrasting colour, to create a focal point, and switch out the stair carpet for a timeless stair runner which creates contrast in the space.

Try adding in some layered lighting (more on this later) with table and wall lamps, to create a cosier feel and make sure you have warm lightbulbs to create a welcoming atmosphere.

With all of these changes, you're going to leave guests wondering if they've stepped into the right home!

4. Personalise the walls

Moving into a new build and being greeted by blank white walls? It's like a blank canvas begging for some personality!

Nothing says home more than family photos and beloved artwork, to really personalise your space, consider implementing a gallery wall or large scale artwork to adorn the walls.

Bold and vibrant prints are sure to grab attention, adding that wow factor and giving your space a real focal point.

"Command hooks will definitely be your friend when moving, some developers say you can hammer nails into the wall straight away, whereas others say to wait a while. With command hooks, you can mean you can get those personal memories on the wall from day one."

5. New build layouts

When tackling the challenge of personalising a new build, navigating layouts can be a bit like solving a puzzle. Often, these spaces are designed with a one-size-fits-all approach, leaving little room for personal flair.

That's where the experts come in handy. Enlisting the help of an Interior Designer can work wonders. They'll wave their magic wand (figuratively speaking) and transform your space into a customised oasis. They'll find creative solutions to maximise every nook and cranny, unveiling layout possibilities you've never even dreamed of.

To see your home from a different perspective, draw out your room from a bird's eye view and try sketching out your furniture in as many different layouts as possible to see what works and what doesn't.

To optimise and personalise the layout of your new build, start by prioritising functionality and traffic flow. Consider how each space will be used and arrange furniture to ensure easy movement throughout the home.

Think about natural light too - position key living areas to capitalise on sunlight, after all, who doesn't want a bit of vitamin D with their morning coffee.

6. Paint your walls

When it comes to new build homes, there is one very common question we always hear: "When can you paint a new build?"

It's often best practice to wait around 6-12 months before picking up the paint brushes as this allows the house time to settle and should prevent any surprise cracks from showing up down the line.

"Putting paint on the wall before a year can void your warranty, however, it’s up to each individual to weigh up your own pros and cons. We painted our 4 year old's room and wallpapered before we moved in so her room was done and she had a space to retreat to when moving areas and starting school. "

If you are waiting to get painting, we promise it will be worth it! Paint has the magic ability to completely transform a space, plus it's such a quick and affordable fix.

To really inject personality into your new home, we suggest challenging yourself when it comes to colour and trying out some more bold or vibrant hues.

With new builds often lacking architectural flair, you can really unleash your inner Picasso to compensate for the missing personality. Try out half walls, painted ceilings, wall archers and feature walls - it's the perfect opportunity to really go wild with colour.

"Putting paint on the wall when every wall needs some colour can feel scary, use colour blocks to add it bit by bit. And use up those leftover bits of paint to do blocks for gallery walls.

My favourite part of having a new build home is that I got to pick a new 'red thread', that one thing that ties my home together."

When choosing a colour scheme. it's always a great idea to have a common 'thread' throughout the entire home. Laura opted for red as her common theme which she featured in each room to create a cohesive look through the entire space. Whatever shade you choose, you can implement it through paint, soft furnishings, artwork or other décor pieces.

7. Maximising space

It's very typical for new build homes to be pretty stingy with storage, the best way to unlock the full potential of the space is bespoke furnishings.

With bespoke, built-in storage, you can have completely tailored solutions to fit your personal needs. Bespoke storage is perfect for all of those awkward nooks and crannies that you're unsure how to utilise.

Extra room under the stairs? Built-in shoe bench could be ideal. Empty space in the bedroom? It could be screaming out for bespoke wardrobes.

8. Adding architectural character

Sure, new builds might lack the charming quirks of period properties, but who says we can't sprinkle a little character dust of our own?

It's all about those subtle details that make a big difference. Want to banish the boxy vibes? Add some coving for a touch of elegance and depth.

Picture rails are another reasonably simple change - they're like the cherry on top, giving your walls a stylish boost, especially when you get creative with paint below them.

9. Wall panelling

Love it or hate it, panelling without a doubt makes a statement and is a great new build decorating idea.

The great thing about panelling is there are so many different styles that can suit all types of aesthetics. From the contemporary allure of shaker style to the timeless charm of wainscoting, there's a panelling style to match any preference.

What's more, panelling offers a chance to play with colour. Paint it a contrasting shade to make it pop against your walls and add depth to your space.

Plus it may not be as expensive, or as time consuming as you think, as DIY kits are readily available online and in most home improvement stores.

10. Transforming the kitchen

It's most likely that when you're buying a new build that you will have very little say on your kitchen design.

But this doesn't mean you have to stick with what you've got, there are loads of minor changes that can help you totally personalise your kitchen.

First up, don't be afraid to get bold. A fresh coat of spray paint on the cabinets can work wonders, adding a splash of personality to the heart of your home. And don't forget about the little details - swapping out the handles for something more your style can give your kitchen a whole new look.

You can also consider removing some upper cabinets to create open shelving. Not only does it make the space feel larger, but it's also the perfect opportunity to show off your favourite glassware or cookbooks.

"Make your kitchen cupboards work for you, those cupboards that you’re rummaging around in, put internal drawers in them, fit a corner cabinet Le Mans and pop those cute and practical shelves up in place of outdated wall cabinets.

Switching out tile splashbacks is also a great way to personalise the kitchen, whether it’s tonal shades or bold and fun tiles, they are a relatively cost-effective way to make your new kitchen your own".

11. Layer your lighting

When you move into your new build you can almost instantly transform and personalise the space by switching out the lighting fixtures.

Let's face it, bare lightbulbs don't really scream "warm welcome".

Choosing your own lamp shades and statement lighting fixtures will add so much personality to the space, and you may want to switch out the lightbulbs to something warmer (under 3000kW) to make sure your lighting doesn't feel too clinical.

Make sure to layer your lighting with a mix of ceiling fixtures, wall and table lamps to create a more relaxing and cosy feel.

"Sometimes you can forget about a socket or two when opting for additional extras, this is where rechargeable lamps were a life saver! Rechargeable lamps add in that accent and ambient lighting that brings warmth and atmosphere to your new build home."

12. Mixing old with the new

You may feel tempted to fill your modern, new build with all contemporary furnishings - because let's face it, it makes sense to have everything matching.

But you can actually make your newly built home feel more personal and full of character by mixing old pieces with the new.

Pieces like mid-century sideboards or Edwardian bureaus can really steal the show, adding a touch of historical charm to any room. Just one vintage gem per room can transport you to another era, infusing your new build with its own unique character.

"I’m frequently in trouble for finding some vintage gems on Facebook Marketplace, but some older furniture with some patina and character in the wood helps bring that much needed character to your home.

In my new build, it’s mid-century modern furniture that takes centre stage - from the bookcase in my daughter's room to the Lego display cabinet in my husband's home office. There is something in each room that suits that space and adds a touch of personality."

Having a beautifully personalised space could be easier (and more affordable) than you think. Get started today:

13. Go bold in the bathroom

If you're a long time follower of My Bespoke Room, you may be familiar with the fact that we love going big and bold in small spaces - especially cloakroom bathrooms.

Plus with how little time is spent in this room, why not seize the opportunity to leave a lasting impression?!

It's time to really get experimental with funky and eclectic wallpaper, paired with bold or vibrant colours to really create the wow factor.

To add extra personality to any of your bathrooms you can switch out the hardware for something more elegant like gold or more bold like matte black.

14. Create comfort with layers

Last but not least, an effortlessly effective way to give your new build some standout charm is by layering up those soft furnishings.

For instance, if changing the flooring isn't an option, a well-placed rug can work wonders, diverting attention from any less-than-ideal surfaces and serving as a captivating centrepiece.

Inject some vibrancy and character into your sofa or bed with bright and bold cushions, instantly elevating the room's atmosphere.

And don't underestimate the power of patterned or textured throws, adding both cosiness and visual interest to the space.
