Pet friendly interior design ideas

At My Bespoke Room, our interior designers take into account the entire family - and yes, that means your furry friends too!

As pet lovers, many of our designers are all too familiar with the struggle of unsightly dog crates and food bowls that clash with their home's style.

So, in honour of National Pet Day, we have pulled together our designer's best ideas for creating a pet-friendly home that doesn't compromise on style.

Want a beautiful home that works for the whole family? Fill out our brief today to start working with one of our professional Interior Designers:

Before we unleash the pet-tacular décor, let's make sure the rest of your home is up to scratch to deal with the rough and tumble that comes with owning four-legged friends.

Because let's face it, nothing's more disappointing than finding your brand-new sofa turned into a scratching post or your gorgeous rug covered in permanent paw prints.

After all, we want to make sure your home isn't just beautiful, but functional for everyday life too.

Fur friendly fabrics

It's not uncommon for our clients to feel a bit apprehensive about picking out soft furnishings when they have pets in the home - but it's all about selecting the perfect fabrics and staying on top of regular cleaning.

Opt for durable fabrics like microfiber or leather for sofas – they’re resistant to scratches and easy to clean with a quick wipe.

For curtains, consider sturdy materials like canvas or polyester blends that can withstand the occasional tug-of-war with curious pets.

And when it comes to rugs, low-pile or flat-weave options, such as sisal or polypropylene are your best friends – they're tough, easy to clean, and less likely to hoard pet hair. Or another hack is to look into outdoor rugs which can be just as stylish, but much more straightforward to clean.

Pro tip: Invest in washable slipcovers or throws to protect your furniture from muddy paws or unexpected accidents, while still adding a touch of flair to your space.

Never make expensive furniture mistakes again! Our designers create a tailored shopping list that works for you and your pet's needs. Get started today:

Pawsome flooring

When it comes to flooring for your furry friends, durability and ease of cleaning are key! Opt for materials like laminate, luxury vinyl, or ceramic tile, as they can handle dirt and scratches like champs.

To add an extra layer of protection (and comfort) to your floor, consider placing rugs or mats in high-traffic areas which will help to catch dirt and debris.

And if you can't resist that carpeted feel, go for nylon or polyester fibres - they're tough and stain-resistant.  Additionally, loop or low pile carpets are a great option as they are less likely to trap pet hair.

We're all about giving your home the wow-factor, but when it comes to owning pets, there are a few design 'no-nos' you have to watch out for.

First off, some house plants (though totally beautiful) can be toxic to pets, instead, opt for pet-safe options like spider plants or Boston ferns - they'll add greenery and texture to your room without posing a threat to your pet.

Next up,  wires - hide those pesky cords! To best protect your pets, invest in cable organisers or get creative with furniture placement to keep cords safely out of reach.

And finally, let's tidy up that storage situation to make sure no cleaning products or medications are lying about.

Dog wash stations

Check out this genius move made by one of our designers, Tracey. She waved her magic wand to create a chic dog wash station in her hallway, banishing muddy paw prints from the rest of the house.

With a spacious basin nestled next to stylish cabinetry, this spot became the ultimate pet pampering paradise. And guess what? It's living proof that pet-centric spaces can be both functional and fabulous.

Embracing a natural theme, Tracey brought the outdoors in with lush green wall paint, acoustic wall panelling, and charming woven baskets, turning this area into a design masterpiece that's far from an eyesore.

Whether your vibe is earthy and natural, boho chic or Scandi sleek this bed blends seamlessly into your space, adding a touch of paw-some perfection without stealing the spotlight.

Bespoke solutions

Like with many other elements in the home, sometimes it's best to go bespoke as you will end up with a tailored solution which best suits you and your pet's needs.

Because who says pet crates have to be an eyesore? At The Pet Carpenter, they're masters at crafting crates that not only keep your pets safe and cosy but also blend seamlessly into your home décor.

With bespoke furnishings, your creativity is the limit - need a pet crate in your home office? Why not combine the two and have it built into the desk? Or perhaps you want to make the crate blend in effortlessly with your kitchen, so why not include a wine rack?!

From choosing the material to picking the perfect colour and finishing touches, you're in the driver's seat when it comes to designing a pet crate that complements your interior style.

Fed up with the daily dance of dodging pet bowls? Say hello to hassle-free feeding with a drawer-included pet crate that's as convenient as it is clever!

No more tripping over bowls or shuffling them around during cleanup—this nifty solution keeps everything neatly tucked away in one spot, banishing clutter for good.

Pet kitchen counter hacks

Talking about hiding away those pesky pet bowls, kitchen designers are getting in on the action too, whipping up low drawers that seamlessly blend into your cabinets and open with just a tap of your toe. It's like magic - your pet's bowls are there when you need them, but hidden away when you don't, leaving your home looking effortlessly chic and clutter-free.

Not only can you hide away those food bowls, but like Wren Kitchens examples, you could cosily store your pet's bed underneath the kitchen island and install storage for all of their accessories.

There are so many innovative solutions when it comes to kitchen designs, so the sky is really the limit when creating a fur friendly kitchen!
