Room reveal: a modern mid-century open-plan space

Written by Rosie Ellis | Apr 17, 2019 4:30:00 PM

As an online interior design company, we don't always get to see our designs come to life. Luckily for us, one of our lovely customers, Kamran, let us pop around for a cuppa and a little photoshoot! His home was designed by Nardus, and it's safe to say both designer and client are over the moon with the final result...

You can Shop The Looks of all of the rooms on our Inspiration page.

The architecture in itself is already super impressive, with a mezzanine overlooking the light and bright dining area. Continuing the bold blue feature wall across the ceiling, only adds to this room’s WOW factor.

Yellow provides the perfect pop of colour to lift the room, and contrasts perfectly against the rich blue wall. Yellow is continued throughout the scheme from finishing touches to the accent chairs on the mezzanine.

It was important to find a sofa with a considerable amount of depth to it, so you can really snuggle up in front of the TV at the end of a long day. Artwork zones the living space – also, a large wall without artwork or some kind of décor is a sad sight!

This Dutchbone TV Cabinet is stunning, and Kamran’s favourite item from the entire design process. Apparently, anyone who visits’ attention goes straight to it – it’s the centrepiece of the room!

And let there be light! When you have this much natural light available to you in your home, you have to make the most of it, and Kamran certainly has by keeping it light and bright and open. Who wouldn’t want to sit down at the dining table with that view?

Tall rooms with high ceilings make your home feel super spacious and grand, but double height areas are what dreams are made of! So much room for activities! (Anyone a Step Brothers fan?!)

The colour scheme is continued upstairs, on the mezzanine with these gorgeous occasional chairs. The mid-century style chairs are elegant yet robust and the perfect seat for admiring the view/relaxing with a good books. The geometric style of the rug is continued onto the pattern of the cushion for a cohesive finish.

A statement mirror is the perfect entrance to a home, not only does it look amazing, but it also makes the space feel instantly larger by bouncing light around the room. Also, I don’t know if you heard but we LOVE indoor greenery. It adds life to the room, looks gorgeous and gives oodles of health benefits.

A Q&A with Kamran

What was your favourite part of the My Bespoke Room process?

My favourite part was waiting for the email from Nardus, telling me my room design was ready for viewing. It was like working with a friend, he was so friendly, he has great passion and enthusiasm for what he does. As soon as we met for the consultation, he was so kind and helpful - overall, a wonderful experience.

Describe you design style?

My tastes, I would say, are probably contemporary, although I hate the word as it's so general! Probably a juxtaposition between modern and more tradition furniture styles, which is reflected in the design of my flat, and I love the result.

Did your idea of the room and the design change throughout the process?

Nardus was really good at guiding me towards what looked better, it's not to say he dictated, but he guided me as the professional - he know's what he's talking about. He gave me different ideas of what could work in the space and there were times when I preferred things where they should be, so that's how it worked out. But no, not hugely, he hit the nail on the head with the brief.

What is the item you love the most from the room makeover?

The Dutchbone TV Cabinet is just out of this world, and it never fails to draw the attention of anyone who visits. I love it, and it's the centrepiece of the room and everything else fits around it like a magnet. That and the mirror! The mirror is a 'statement piece' as Nardus calls it, and it's a great introduction to the flat.

Meet the designer - Nardus Lamprecht

Nardus grew up in South Africa and has lived in Toronto, Amsterdam and Chicago where he left his career as a dispensing optician and followed his passion for interior design. Hurrah for us! He has worked in both residential and commercial design before joining My Bespoke Room and enjoys creating spaces that enhance the lifestyles of their occupants. He believes the way a room feels is just as important as how it looks. Too right! Have a nosy around his gorgeous home on our Houzz Projects page!
