In July we invited young people from the ages of 8-16 who were dreaming of a career in interior design to join our course run by Head of Design Lucy. Through 4 weeks of lessons, she took them through the interior design process including writing up a brief, correctly measuring a room, finding inspiration and presenting their ideas. The end goal was to create a design for their bedroom for the new school year.
The competition has now closed but you can still watch the course here:
Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our #MBRDesignSummerCamp and especially to those who entered our interior design competition. We absolutely loved seeing your creations and were so impressed with what you produced!
The Results
We received so many brilliant entries and loved seeing their ingenious and beautiful designs, click here to take a look at some of our favourite designs that made the shortlist. However, in the end, there could only be 2 winners and so Our Head of Design Lucy made the final call and selected Joseph and Amalia as our winners!
"Joseph and Amalia really impressed me with their beautifully presented designs. They went into great detail surveying, drawing up their bedroom plans and creating furniture schedules. They used Roomle to draw up their bedrooms and present their chosen proposed layout.
I loved how each of them developed a strong concept for their rooms and pulled it all together really beautifully in their mood boards. They considered not only the themes and colours they wanted but also how they wanted the space needed to function. This is the key difference between someone who decorates and someone who designs"
- Lucy Henderson, Head of Design, My Bespoke Room.
Amalia Age 13 - Winner of the 12-16-year-old category
Amalia loved a more soft and bohemian room. Our designers loved the cosy natural theme she was striding towards s loved the green panelling that brings texture into the space as well as the creative hat display which is a perfect expression of Joseph's personality. After spending some time with our Head of Design, Lucy, they collaborated to create this brilliant 2D mood board of the bedroom, along with a curated shopping list so Joseph could easily purchase the items he needs with his £500 My Bespoke Room Shopping voucher and bring this design to life.
"Amalia's mood board was stunning as it was a very neutral colour palette but she had taken care to propose plenty of texture and a mix of materials in her room design to add interest, warmth and comfort...not always an easy thing to do with a neutral-coloured room!"
- Lucy Henderson, Head of Design, My Bespoke Room.

After the competition ended, we asked the entrants what they liked about the experience. Many enjoyed learning how to make mood boards, while others enjoyed getting the inside scoop on how an interior designer actually thinks and how it all works.
We were so happy to introduce these young minds into our world and see them fall in love with it as we have. Here are some examples of the feedback we received:
“I loved doing the course and I can’t wait to use all of my skills for further adventures of designing” - Hedi
“It’s been very insightful and I can’t wait to do interior design at university and get a job in this sector. You’ve made my dream feel so much more achievable and given me encouragement to do well. Thank you 😊” - Emily
