There are no flying cars just yet, but that doesn't mean we might not need to make adjustments to live successfully in the present day, with all the demands of the 21st century. New year resolutions don't have the best reputation, they're often either forgotten or failed by January 20th. However, we have compiled a list of little changes that you can apply to your home that, if maintained, can make your life so much easier, way of living more sustainable leaving both yourself and the planet happier. Win, win, right?

1. Have a place for everything

Do you have a drawer that's overflowing with wires, batteries, old keys, stationery, receipts and other miscellaneous items, lesser-known as Michael McIntyre's named 'man drawer'? Or kitchen cupboards with lunch boxes with lids that don't match next to pans and crockery? Maybe a bookshelf that is less styled and more 'plonked' with odds and ends and bits and bobs? Either way now is the time to find these lost souls a proper home!

The most effective starting point is to clear out your cupboards/drawers/shelves. Decide what you want or need to keep and then evaluate the newly created free space. Once this is done, you can start rehoming your knickknacks.

2. Don't double up

This year, we're mostly subtracting rather than adding. Don't get us wrong, a home update will always need some kind of new material or furniture. And don't worry, we're not asking you to only have one set of bedding or one towel. We're talking about the everyday appliances, cleaning materials and general décor. If you only need one of the items, then only have one of the items.

This way you will declutter your home and make more space. Plus, some of those appliance doppelgänger's could be resold and you could make a bit of extra £££.

3. Make yourself smile

We always aim to design interiors that make you beam from ear to ear. However, we're talking about something even more than a beautifully curated room and perfectly designed layout. We urge you to choose one thing in your home, or even each room, that is a bit different, a bit quirky, but you absolutely adore. This added bit of character will be sure to make you smile every time you see it.

4. Buy less stuff

This one is for both your own mental well-being, and the well-being of the beloved home we all share: our incredible planet. We have more 'stuff' than ever before - heaps of it. Inevitably, a lot of this stuff ends up in landfill. Whether it goes straight to the tip or has a longer journey through Depop, charity shops, recycled materials, eventually the lesser treasured 'things' ends up as rubbish. It's sad, but true. Let's collectively try to only buy things we need or know that we or the recipient of a gift will truly treasure and/or use.

Also, buying less addresses the aforementioned dreaded clutter. Free your space and free your mind.

5. Organise your filing

Let's get organised! We know, this is a tedious task, especially if you're still hoarding payslips from your first job as a 16 y/o waiter. Nevertheless, once it's done its done.  With all your admin in order, all you need to do is keep it that way. It will save you heaps of time in the future and really put your mind at rest knowing where anything you may need is and is easily accessible.

6. Ethical and sustainable living

We've already touched on this a little, and will probably mention it again before the end of the blog post so we're genuinely sorry if you're bored of hearing about saving the world - we've always had big ambitions. It's already at the forefront of our mind as designers, however, we intend to try and make homes more ethical and sustainable.

The above room is a vegan design for A Place In The Sun's Jasmine Harman. Now, we're not asking you to make a complete transformation in the way you live - besides, throwing out everything and starting again with all vegan furniture and materials will only add to that landfill situation that we were talking about.

How about, this year, try and think about what you're buying and where from. I.e. Will this new piece of furniture last for 5 years? Will you still like it in 5 years? Do you agree with the company's morals and ethics? Are the materials kind to the planet, or are they a little bit toxic? No one can be perfect, and it would be exhausting to check every single thing you purchase or use, but that thought process could help you make little changes to be more eco-friendly this year.

Want help choosing the right items so you don't make expensive and wasteful mistakes? Don't fret, we can totally help with that. Book a free and no obligation consultation by clicking the button below.

7. A new cleaning routine

Strange question incoming: have you ever rethought how you go about your cleaning chores in the home? Sometimes, you may not need all the products and chemicals that you spend lots of money on. You may be using the wrong kind of product for the material. Make this the year that you nail your cleaning routine, this way you never have products you don't need, you can clear out those almost empty bottles from under the sink and perhaps even make the cleaning products and clothes more eco-friendly as you go.

8. Energy level = low

Not your personal energy level, we hope that remains at a consistent high. Maybe this year you would like to consider finding the most efficient way to power your home. This way, your carbon footprint and bills remain low. Set yourself a target in how much £££ you can realistically save from cutting down your household energy, then treat yourself with the money you have saved!

9. Little cleans and big cleans

Have you ever heard the phrase: tidy home = tidy mind?

Cleaning can be a right chore, but deep cleans - they're something else. If you stay on top of your cleaning regime, neither need to be quite so gruelling. Lots of little cleans but not many deep cleans mean that soon, the little cleans don't really do the job. Schedule in once a month deep cleans and once a week general cleans (or whatever suits you). This way, your home remains clean and tidy and the bit behind your sofa gets cleaned more than twice a year - less mucky dust, dropped sweets and the occasional spider to be greeted with!

10. Hang those frames

gallery wall hallway design

We don't know about you, but this is always a job that we put off time and time again. Have you got countless family photos that are intended to grace the walls? Plans of a gallery wall that's been pushed to the bottom of the to do list? Either way, make this the year that hang those frames and/or put art on the walls.

Don't know where to start creating a gallery wall? Watch our demo with Abstract House:

Artwork related commitment issues? Opt for a picture shelf! This way you're only mounting one thing on the wall, but you can chop and change your framed prints as often as you like.

Need help with finishing touches in your home? We offer a Mini Makeover package for this exact reason. Click the button below for a free, no obligation chat to see if this could be beneficial for you.

11. Don't wait to wash up

Seems simple, doesn't it? Well. When you're completely wiped out after a long day of work, life's other responsibilities and cooking a delicious dinner, the last thing you want to do is stand by the sink washing up. Got a dishwasher? That's easy enough, right? Wrong. Even just the idea of stacking the dishwasher feels like it could push you over the edge.

Try and push through your protests and just wash up or stack the dishwasher straight after dinner, it'll save you a job the next morning and honestly, it might even change your life.

12. Add greenery

You might want to make it your mission to incorporate more greenery into your home. Plants and flowers have oodles of health benefits such as purifying the air, improve mood, decrease stress and can help you focus. Plus, they look pretty great and are one of the most affordable ways to update your room.

13. Clean the pantry

Do you have a specific shelf for cans, a basket for pasta and rice, an organised spice rack and neatly lined up jars? Yes? Well, you're doing better than us and may as well skip this step. If, like us, your baked beans are best pals with the chive and tinned tomatoes are hiding somewhere behind the biscuit tin maybe it's time for a pantry/cupboard reshuffle.

Try taking everything out and establishing what you need to keep (and what passed it's sell-by date in 2009 - goodbye John West tuna) and categorise these in categories. I.e. tins & cans, jars, spices, pastas, rices & grains etc. Then, decide where you're going to house these items in your pantry and cupboards. Voila, a perfectly organised pantry - this might even give you some new recipe ideas using food you'd forgotten about!

14. Refresh your upholstery

living room with yellow curtains and geometric pouffes

Ok, now's time to come clean. Did you buy your curtains 5+ years ago, hang them up and then left them to do their job? It's nothing to be ashamed of, but they might be screaming out for a bit of TLC. You won't believe the difference a quick wash (and a steam if you're feeling fruity) will make on your upholstery.

If you cushion covers on the sofa are removable, shove them in the machine too. Plan to do these refreshes routinely throughout the year and everything will not only look 10x brighter than before, but stay fresh too.

15. Clear out the loft

Ok, we're not saying you need to do a complete loft conversion such as the beautiful master bedroom above. But if the countless boxes, forgotten childhood toys, old school reports and the 'out of sight, out of mind' loft storage solution is starting to be less out of mind and more a 'job for the future' hanging over your head (literally), then this year is the year to truly sort out the attic.

It may take hours, it may take an entire day it may take an entire weekend, but it will feel so much better when it's done. You will instantly feel decluttered, accomplished and comforted knowing that there is now a place for everything up there.

16. Switch up your layout

Fancy a room refresh but don't necessarily need or anything new? Why don't you simply just try moving things around a bit? This can completely change how you use a room and how it looks. When considering layout, first use how this room is used most and design to cater to its main function. You might find that you couldn't believe you were coping before!

If you need a little hand holding when working out the best layout for you, you can always give us a call. Two out of three of our flat fee room design packages offer layouts and we also offer bespoke consultancy if you don't need a complete room transformation. 17. Update that room

Do you have one room in your house that you just can't bear the sight of? One where you don't know where to start? One that you recently updated but chose a wallpaper/paint that you massively regret? We've all been there. This year, failing that this decade, commit to updating this room to a space that you adore.

If you're ready to get started but want the help of a professional designer (at a super affordable fee), then feel free to book a free, no obligation consultation via the button below.

18: Tackle the toys

We don't know how they do it, but children manage to collect an unprecedented amount of toys, and they end up EVERYWHERE. If this is something that winds you up daily, it might be worth considering making a change this year.

Reconsider toy storage in your home and then sift through the toys. Recycle or give to charity any toys that aren't sentimental or are no longer played with and then (just like the herbs and spices) categorise the toys. I.e. action figures, lego, cuddly toys, board games. Then, the fun part (if you're an adult who gets kick out of organisation and order), you can sort these into labelled storage units. Boxes, baskets, ottomans and closed shelving units are perfect to tidy away the toys.

19: Give a bed a makeover

We're not talking an entire bedroom - but we're not stopping you if this is what you want - we're just talking about your bed. Treat yourself to lovely new sheets, a fancy bedspread, stylish scatter cushions or super cosy fresh duvet set, or all of the above. This will make you look forward to bedtime, and even look forward to making your bed in the morning! A life-changing update that inspires other healthy habits - two cushions, one bed.

20: Wardrobe workout

We've called it a workout because often, for us, it does require quite a lot of strength and agility to manoeuvre through the amalgamation of clothes we've seemed to collect over the years. Plus, we'd like to pass it off as our daily workout - new year resolution to get fit: consider it done.

Let's make a rule, anything you haven't worn in the last year and can't put into an outfit to wear over the next month, get rid. Its time has gone in your care. Sell on Depop or Ebay or donate to a charity shop - someone else might love the items of clothing that are currently gathering dust in your wardrobe.

21. Get stuff done

And finally, let's just try and get stuff done. Those odd jobs, big cleans, clear-outs and home updates that we put off time and time again let's make this the year that we actually make some movements. We're in this together - we'll share our progress with you, remember to share your progress with us on our Instagram: @mybespokeroom
