We'll also give advice on how to choose the right paint colour to suit your style and personality, as well as how to create features through paint. So, let's get started!

What is the best colour for a bedroom?

Dark and dramatic bedroom

There is no simple and obvious answer to this. The best colour for a bedroom really depends on you and your personal preferences. Don’t worry we're not going to leave you with this as a cop-out answer!

Some people prefer light, calming colours like blue, pink or green to help them relax and get a good night's sleep, while others might prefer bright, energizing colours like yellow or orange to help them feel energised and motivated in the morning.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide which colour best suits your personality and the mood you'd like to create. Consider how the colour makes you feel, and how it will fit in with the other elements of the room, like the furniture and décor. Whatever colour you choose, it’s important to remember that it should be a colour you love, so you can enjoy spending time in your bedroom for years to come!

What are the colour trends for bedrooms in 2023?

Sage green bedroom

According to our interior designers, the colour trends for bedrooms in 2023 will be bold, playful, and eclectic. Darker shades of blues, greens, and purples are predicted to be popular, as well as lighter earthy tones like terracotta and sage.

Accents of bright and pastel paint colours will be used to add a pop of vibrancy to our bedrooms. Like in 2022, metallics such as gold, silver, bronze, and copper are also expected to be popular to add a luxury touch to the decor.

Layering different shades of the same colour can create a warm and welcoming atmosphere - more on this later! However, in the end, colour trends for bedrooms in 2023 look like they’ll be all about creating a unique and comfortable space that reflects your personality.

What is the most calming colour for a bedroom?

Calming blue and blush bedroom

You won’t be shocked to find that green is, in our opinion, one of the most calming bedroom colours. In fact, more and more of our clients are seeking green bedroom ideas so they can have an incredibly calming and soothing space to relax and unwind. This is because green is associated with nature and can evoke feelings of comfort and peace. Incorporating green into your bedroom décor can help to create a tranquil atmosphere and bring a sense of balance to the room.

Shades of sage and olive can create a calming ambience, while brighter shades of green can invigorate and energize. Adding touches of texture, such as plants and wood accents, can also help to create a space that is calming and inviting.

Should bedrooms be painted darker or lighter?

Well, it depends! First, consider how you want the room to feel, if you want to create an airy, relaxed feel, then a lighter bedroom colour can help you achieve this by opening up a space and making it feel larger. However darker colours can absorb more light and can make your bedroom feel more intimate and cosy.

Take a look at the image above. This bedroom belongs to our brilliant designer Ria who originally wanted a crisp clean and bohemian feeling space but later opted for a more dramatic and cosy feeling bedroom. She achieved this feel by painting this back wall (Nomad by Coat Paints).  This bold colour creates an eye-catching focal point and adds dimension to the room.

Grey bedroom ideas

Adding grey paint to your bedroom can be a great way to create a modern and sophisticated look.

When selecting the grey paint colour, consider the natural light in the room and choose a shade that best brings out the other colours in the room. We cannot stress enough that grey cannot be used only with white or black - it needs more contrast and texture - it needs something bold to contrast with.

Pink and green bedroom ideas

Pink and green bedroom

It's a great idea to use pink and green paint together to create a vibrant, eye-catching look!

To start, you want to make sure the colours you choose are complementary. For example, a light pink and a deep green work well together. You can then use a variety of techniques to combine the colours.

You can use a simple colour-blocking technique by painting one colour first and then using a brush to lightly blend in the other colour. You can also create a striped effect by using tape to create stripes and then painting each stripe a different colour. Have fun playing around with different colours and techniques to create the perfect look!

When painting with pink and grey, the key is to balance the two colours. For bedrooms with a lot of natural light, you can use a light pink with a medium grey for a subtle contrast.

You could also try using a pink feature wall and a lighter shade of grey for the other walls, or use different shades or grey for the walls and light pink for the ceiling. To add more texture, you could use a grey wallpaper with a subtle pink pattern or a pink wall mural with grey accents. Have fun experimenting and creating the perfect pink and grey bedroom!

This paint technique can also be used to emphasize the height of a room, as the painting will draw the eye up the wall. Additionally, painting three-quarters of the wall can help to break up a long, plain wall, adding visual interest and making the room feel more inviting.
