What is the best colour for a bedroom?

Trying to choose the best paint colour for a bedroom? There is no simple and obvious answer to this. The best colour for a bedroom really depends on you and your personal preferences. Don’t worry we're not going to leave you with this as a cop-out answer!

Some people prefer light and calm paint colours for bedrooms like blue, pink or green to help them relax and get a good night's sleep, while others might prefer bright, energizing colours like yellow or orange to help them feel energised and motivated in the morning.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide which colour best suits your personality and the mood you'd like to create. Consider how the colour makes you feel, and how it will fit in with the other elements of the room, like the furniture and décor. Whatever colour you choose, it’s important to remember that it should be a colour you love, so you can enjoy spending time in your bedroom for years to come!

Current bedroom colour trends

Sage green and grey bedroom

According to our interior designers, the colour trends we are seeing more of for bedrooms will be bold, playful, and eclectic. Darker shades of blues, greens, and purples are predicted to be popular, as well as lighter earthy tones like terracotta and sage.

Accents of bright and pastel paint colours will be used to add a pop of vibrancy to our bedrooms. As well as this, metallics such as gold, silver, bronze, and copper are also expected to be popular to add a luxury touch to the décor.

Layering different shades of the same colour can create a warm and welcoming atmosphere - more on this later! However, in the end, current colour trends for bedrooms look like they’ll be all about creating a unique and comfortable space that reflects your personality.

What are the most calming colours for a bedroom?

White and grey colour scheme

Starting with the most neutral and the most classic colour palette, white and grey bedrooms are the sort that’ll make your shoulders drop an inch as soon as your toes are over the threshold.

Fresh and clean, just like the bedsheets you cocoon yourself in night after night, these are colours to help your mind empty and to find your zen – just what we all need after a run-ragged day.

In colour psychology terms, greys are psychologically neutral making them a very restful colour choice for bedrooms. Grey is also a colour that recedes, making it a great choice if you want to maximise space in your bedroom.

You won’t be shocked to find that green is at the top of our list of calm paint colours for bedrooms.  In fact, more and more of our clients are seeking green bedroom ideas so they can have an incredibly calming and soothing space to relax and unwind. This is because green is associated with nature and can evoke feelings of comfort and peace. Incorporating green into your bedroom décor can help to create a tranquil atmosphere and bring a sense of balance to the room.

Shades of sage and olive can create a calming ambience, while brighter shades of green can invigorate and energize. Adding touches of texture, such as plants and wood accents, can also help to create a space that is calming and inviting.

Pink colour scheme

Pinks are some of the best calm paint colours for bedrooms because they’re innately warm and nurturing – exactly what you want from the room destined to restore you the most.

Some of our designers describe pink as "the colour of cuddles", and they're not wrong! Providing you’re not painting your space in flamboyant neon pink, it’ll feel as though your room’s wrapping its arms around you into an embrace that leaves you feeling safe, secure and totally rested.

A pink bedroom will also coax you into using lots of cosseting textures, such as sheepskin rugs, tasselled blankets and berber-style rugs, all of which create a more relaxing space.

Blue colour scheme

Further proof that bedroom colour schemes don’t have to stay on the pale and neutral side of the spectrum, we are also great advocates of blue bedroom ideas.

Remember that while green is restful, in colour psychology, the colour blue is synonymous with positivity and peace. Think about the term ‘blue sky thinking’ or the calming effect of the deep blue sea. Blue is a feel-good, steadying colour and fits like a glove in the room that should be the most relaxing one under your roof.

Should bedrooms be painted darker or lighter?

Light vs dark bedroom colour scheme

Well, it depends! First, consider how you want the room to feel, if you want to create an airy, relaxed feel, then a lighter bedroom colour can help you achieve this by opening up a space and making it feel larger. However, darker colours can absorb more light and can make your bedroom feel more intimate and cosy.

Take a look at the image above. This bedroom belongs to our brilliant designer Ria who originally wanted a crisp clean and bohemian feeling space but later opted for a more dramatic and cosy feeling bedroom. She achieved this feel by painting this back wall (Nomad by Coat Paints). This bold colour creates an eye-catching focal point and adds dimension to the room.

Grey bedroom ideas

Natural grey bedroom

Adding grey paint to your bedroom can be a great way to create a modern and sophisticated look.

When selecting the grey paint colour, consider the natural light in the room and choose a shade that best brings out the other colours in the room. We cannot stress enough that grey cannot be used only with white or black - it needs more contrast and texture - it needs something bold to contrast with.

Green and grey bedroom ideas

Emerald green and grey bedroom

Green and grey are great colours to use in a bedroom as they both can create a calm and relaxing atmosphere!

You could start by painting the walls a light shade of grey and then add pops of green through accent pieces like throw pillows or a blanket. You could also choose a darker shade of green for an accent wall, which would create a nice contrast to the grey.

Pink and green bedroom ideas

It's a great idea to use pink and green paint together to create a vibrant, eye-catching look!

To start, you want to make sure the colours you choose are complementary. For example, a light pink and a deep green work well together. You can then use a variety of techniques to combine the colours.

You can use a simple colour-blocking technique by painting one colour first and then using a brush to lightly blend in the other colour. You can also create a striped effect by using tape to create stripes and then painting each stripe a different colour. Have fun playing around with different colours and techniques to create the perfect look!

Pink and grey bedroom ideas

When painting with pink and grey, the key is to balance the two colours. For bedrooms with a lot of natural light, you can use a light pink with a medium grey for a subtle contrast.

You could also try using a pink feature wall and a lighter shade of grey for the other walls, or use different shades or grey for the walls and light pink for the ceiling. To add more texture, you could use a grey wallpaper with a subtle pink pattern or a pink wall mural with grey accents. Have fun experimenting and creating the perfect pink and grey bedroom!
